ONE IN 7 PATIENTS COMES TO TURKEY FOR TREATMENT OF EYE DISEASE
Ophthalmic tourism refers to the phenomenon of individuals traveling internationally for eye treatments. These treatments can range from vision correction surgeries (such as LASIK) to cataract removal, glaucoma management, retinal surgeries, and other specialized procedures. Medical tourism has become a popular trend worldwide as patients seek affordable healthcare options without compromising on quality. Ophthalmic tourism has gained particular traction due to the rise in demand for vision correction surgeries and the increasing number of patients with eye conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma.
.
WHY CHOOSE TURKEY FOR OPHTHALMIC TREATMENTS?
Turkey has emerged as a leading destination for ophthalmic tourism for several reasons:
- One of the main reasons patients choose Turkey for eye surgery and treatments is the significantly lower cost of treatment. A typical LASIK surgery in the United States can cost upwards of $2,000 per eye, while the same procedure in Turkey costs between $500 and $1,500, offering savings of up to 70%.
. - Turkey boasts a network of the best JCI-accredited hospitals and specialized eye care centers equipped with the latest technology. These hospitals are staffed by highly trained ophthalmologists who have received education and certification from some of the best medical institutions around the world.
. - Turkish ophthalmic centers are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, for femtosecond lasers for LASIK surgeries, retinal imaging systems, and phacoemulsification machines for cataract surgery.
. - With internationally trained doctors, modern facilities, and patient-centered care, Turkish hospitals ensure the highest standards of treatment. Additionally, many medical centers provide extensive services for eye patients, including airport transfers, translation services, and accommodations.
. - Turkey offers a unique combination of medical care and tourism. Patients not only receive high-quality treatments but can also enjoy a rich cultural experience, whether in the historic city of Istanbul or the coastal beauty of Antalya.
.
As Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul is an obvious choice for international patients seeking eye surgery. It is a bustling metropolis that serves as a cultural, historical, and economic center, with a rich history that spans thousands of years. Istanbul has become a medical tourism hub due to its modern healthcare infrastructure, advanced technology, and the presence of internationally recognized ophthalmic centers.
Several hospitals and clinics in Istanbul have earned a reputation for providing high-quality ophthalmic surgeries. Some of the most prominent institutions include:
The number of international patients seeking ophthalmic treatments in Istanbul has been steadily increasing. According to reports from the Istanbul Medical Tourism Association (IMTA), ophthalmic tourism in Istanbul has seen an average annual growth rate of 20-25% over the past five years. In 2022 alone, more than 40,000 international patients traveled to Istanbul for eye surgeries.
The most common procedures sought by these patients include:
- LASIK and PRK surgeries for vision correction, which constitute nearly 50% of all ophthalmic procedures performed in Istanbul.
- Cataract surgery, which makes up about 30% of the procedures.
- Retinal surgeries and glaucoma treatments, which account for the remaining 20%.
Patients come from a wide range of countries, with the largest groups originating from:
- Germany (14%)
- Russia (12%)
- Middle Eastern countries (10%)
- The United States and the UK (8% each)
Many patients combine their medical treatment with tourism, taking advantage of Istanbul’s unique blend of history, culture, and modern amenities.
.
TOP OPHTHALMIC HOSPITAL CLINICS IN ANTALYA
While Istanbul attracts the majority of medical tourists, Antalya is gaining popularity as a destination for ophthalmic surgeries. Known for beautiful Mediterranean coastline, mild climate, and serene environment, Antalya offers a more relaxed setting for recovery. It is also a top choice for patients seeking both medical care and a vacation in one of Turkey’s most scenic regions.
Although Antalya does not yet match Istanbul in terms of the volume of international medical tourists, it has been seeing a steady increase in patients seeking ophthalmic treatments. It is estimated that 15-20% of medical tourists visiting Antalya come for eye surgeries. In 2022, over 15,000 international patients traveled to Antalya for various eye-related treatments.
Patients visiting Antalya for ophthalmic surgery are often seeking more affordable treatment options, as well as a calm and scenic environment for recovery. The most common procedures performed in Antalya include:
- LASIK and PRK surgeries (approximately 40% of all ophthalmic procedures)
- Cataract surgery (around 35% of all procedures)
- Retinal surgery and glaucoma treatments (about 25%)
The largest groups of international patients come from countries such as:
- Germany (20%)
- Russia (15%)
- Middle Eastern countries (10%)
- Western Europe (including the UK and France) (5%)

TYPES OF EYE SURGERIES COMMONLY PERFORMED
LASIK Surgery:
LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is one of the most popular eye surgeries globally and a key driver of ophthalmic tourism. The procedure corrects refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Turkey is best renowned for offering the high-quality LASIK surgeries at a fraction of the cost in USA, Canada, UK and Ireland countries.
Cataract Surgery:
Cataracts are a common eye condition among older individuals, and Turkey’s ophthalmic centers offer advanced cataract surgery using the phacoemulsification techniques and premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) for superior outcomes.
Retina Treatments:
Turkey’s advanced medical technology allows for the treatment of complex retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment. Laser therapy, vitrectomy, and other cutting-edge treatments are commonly offered.
Glaucoma Surgery:
Glaucoma treatments in Turkey are typically minimally invasive, including iStent surgery, laser therapy, and more traditional surgical approaches. These treatments aim to reduce intraocular pressure and prevent damage to the optic nerve.
.
Turkey Medicals, “Ophthalmic tourism in Turkey, especially in Istanbul and Antalya, continues to grow as patients from all over the world seek affordable, high-quality eye care. With world-class medical facilities, experienced ophthalmologists, advanced technology, and attractive tourist destinations, Turkey offers a compelling option for those in need of eye surgery“, International Patient Corrdinator said.
.
While Istanbul remains the leading destination for medical tourists, Antalya’s appeal as a tranquil and scenic location makes it an attractive alternative for those seeking a more relaxed recovery environment. As the number of international patients seeking ophthalmic treatments in Turkey continues to rise, it is clear that the country will remain a dominant player in the global ophthalmic tourism industry.
